Phase 2 MDHL West MI Tryouts & WMV
West Michigan Varsity (WMV) was established in 2019 as a split season program designed for players who want to win the MAHA State Championships and USA Hockey National Championships.
WMV provides teams at the 18u and 16u level. Any player playing varsity hockey in winter that wants to commit to championship culture is eligible to try out for our program. Top players from various schools are brought together in the fall to compete in a condensed regular season leading up to the Split Season Playoffs.
**Split season does NOT conflict with MHSAA Varsity Hockey, it is designed as a way for players to extend their season in fall and spring**
Season Overview
FALL (August - early November)
17 Regular Season Games (minimum)
Our teams will compete in the newly formed split season league: the Greater MI Prospects Hockey League (GMPHL)
League play is structured on a home and home format plus showcase / tournament events. *Most away games will be in the Metro Detroit area, home games will be played in Grand Rapids.
Season concludes with Spilt Playoffs where teams compete for auto bids to the MAHA State Tournament in the Spring
At 18u, 2 teams receive auto bids (Champ and Finalist). At 16u only the Split Champion will receive an auto bid
WINTER (November- March)
Players return to their varsity programs and play MHSAA hockey for their school
SPRING (March- April)
After the MHSAA varsity season concludes and if qualified, WMV teams will compete in the MAHA State Championships.
If the team wins the MAHA State Championships, they will advance to the USA Hockey National Championships with a chance to prove they are the nation's best.
